(15 Feb 1999) AIDS has become the scourge of Africa less than 20 years after being identified. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome hit Africans first and hardest. But one of the countries worst affected, Kenya, has provided what could be a lifeline. It's early days and the task ahead is huge, not least because AIDS workers are struggling to strip away the myths still associated with the problem and change the attitudes of many of those most at risk. But the vaccine trials give the Kenyans greater hope.
