Mahler's restless sixth symphony puzzled his contemporaries, but it continues to grow in popularity with modern listeners. The present recording by Dimitri Mitropoulos and the New York Philharmonic is considered to be among the outstanding Mahler recordings of history.
Even in its most sentimental moments, a tone of frustration runs through the score. By the final movement all attempts at resolution and reason are questioned and thrown down. Mitropoulos places his trust in the score; providing the music with everything that it needs, and nothing that it doesn't. The challenges of a symphony that offers no resolution give way to musical clarity and the steady hand of a great conductor.
