Sports cars like the Porsche 356, the Sunbeam Alpine, or the old Triumphs were icons of their era – but none are as rare and mysterious as the Martaré GT.
Designed in the Netherlands by Ed Martaré, this 1965 fiberglass beauty was built on a VW Beetle platform with an 1.8L boxer engine. Only three prototypes ever saw the light of day – until tragedy struck. A fire in the workshop destroyed the project, leaving just a handful of survivors. Today, we’re driving the only road-registered Martaré GT in existence.
With its concept-car looks, ultra-light 740 kg curb weight, and unique door design, the Martaré GT feels like a lost piece of 1960s automotive history. On twisty backroads, it’s pure analog driving fun – and an experience that blends the quirks of a VW Beetle with the soul of a Ferrari-inspired design.
