In the city of Chortkiv, in Western Ukraine, the first solar-powered critical infrastructure project has been implemented by Nefco. The project ensures uninterrupted water services for some 30,000 residents and for over 2,700 internally displaced persons living in the city today.
Three solar plants with a total capacity of 340 kW now supply about 20% of electricity needs for two water pumping stations and a wastewater facility in Chortkiv, operated by the city's water utility company.
The Chortkiv solar energy project serves as a demonstration project for other Ukrainian municipalities looking at ways to support the electricity supply to provide reliable infrastructure services for its residents.
The project has been grant funded by the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P) (EUR 460,000), Sweden (EUR 54,960 in technical assistance), and local co-financing from the city of Chortkiv (EUR 33,846).
