JD Vance Reacts To Pope Francis’ Death 1 Day After Meeting Him

Vice President JD Vance was one of the last people to visit Pope Francis before his death on Easter Monday. The Vice President and the Pope briefly met on Easter Sunday, April 20, to exchange greetings. During their encounter, which reportedly lasted a few minutes, Pope Francis gave Vance chocolate Easter eggs for his and wife Usha Vance’s three young children. A day earlier, on Saturday, Vance met with the Vatican’s secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin and foreign minister, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, with the Vatican sharing afterwards that there was an “exchange of opinions.” “There was an exchange of opinions on the international situation, especially regarding countries affected by war, political tensions and difficult humanitarian situations, with particular attention to migrants, refugees, and prisoners,” the Vatican’s statement read, adding, “Finally, hope was expressed for serene collaboration between the state and the Catholic Church in the United States, whose valuable service to the most vulnerable people was acknowledged.” The Argentina-born pontiff, who battled a series of health issues, is known for his efforts to make the Catholic Church more inclusive and has previously criticized President Trump’s mass deportation policy. Following the news of the pope’s passing, Vance took to X to pay tribute to His Holiness, writing in part, “I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful. May God rest his soul.”
