Meredith Brooks is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist best known for her sharp, empowering blend of rock, pop, and alternative music. Born June 12, 1958 in Corvallis, Oregon, Brooks began her career performing in local bands during the 1980s, but rose to international prominence in 1997 with her breakout hit “Bitch” — a bold, unapologetic anthem that became one of the defining songs of the late-’90s female rock movement.
Her breakthrough album, Blurring the Edges (1997), received widespread acclaim and commercial success, earning her Grammy nominations for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song. The record combined confessional songwriting with guitar-driven production, aligning her with the wave of strong, alternative-leaning female artists of the era, such as Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, and Fiona Apple.
Brooks continued her career with albums such as Deconstruction (1999) and Bad Bad One (2002), demonstrating both her musicianship and production skills. Beyond her solo work, she has collaborated with and produced for other artists, continuing to advocate for women’s empowerment and artistic authenticity in the music industry.
