With antibiotic resistance growing, it’s imperative to develop new weapons for fighting infections. Using the CLS, researchers from Queen’s University are trying to better understand how bacteria attach themselves to the host cells they’re going to infect. The team is working on strategies for preventing long, thin proteins called adhesins from binding to sugar molecules on the surface of cells – the first step in an infection. It appears that introducing a type of sugar called fucose may disrupt the binding process by confusing the adhesins about which sugar they should latch on to, thereby preventing infections before they can start.
