DJ'ing on the Saginaw River and admiring the silos that were transformed as part of the Shine Bright Saginaw Mural Project. One of the main purposes of this video was to test out three things: (1) the Korg Handytraxx Play Mini Turntables; (2) the Jackery Explorer 300 Portable Power Station; and (3), the Rolls Stereo Mini Mixer (Shout out to Pri yon Joni!).
If you want to skip the intro and get tho the music, jump in 1:45. in this video, I'm playing some, what we called in Detroit in the 80's, Progressive. It was 115+ R&B, Danceable Pop, Freestyle, Electro, Italo Disco, Italo House, and early House...But we called it Progressive. Some, in other places, also called it "Post Disco".
It was a beautiful morning in Saginaw Michigan, to go and do some outside DJ'ing. I posted up on the bank of the Saginaw River near the Frank N. Andersen Celebration Park, where they were holding day two of the Saginaw Art Fair (I DJ'd at the fair the day prior...there is a video, but the audio is low quality) set up. There was a group finishing up a 5K on a running trail between my spot on the river bank and where I parked my car. They didn't have any music or a DJ for their 5K, so you know I threw a few of them my card in passing, as I was lugging my gear from the car to my spot on the river bank. Someone I passed my card to passed my card to the event coordinator, and that's what you're seeing around the 2:22 mark in the video.
I'm very happy with the results of all things tested, I'm happy with the mix (not perfect, but I think it's pretty good for a first time mix on a set of portable turntables).
With the Korg Handytraxx Turntables, I had to change out the slipmats. The slipmats that came with the units give too much drag. Also, the 45 adapter that comes with the units have too much play. When I use other 45 adapters, there are issues when scratching. I find that the old school 45 insert adapters (you probably remember those yellow discs sitting around the family stereo console back in the day) work best, but make sure they are the flat ones and not the ones with the little raised dots. There were a few times when it felt like there was some pitch variation during play, but that may have been the slipmats. The sound is impeccable in comparison to the Numark. I didn't test out the effects, looper, and other features. As a purist DJ, I really was just concerned with the operation as a turntable. I will be doing a similar test soon with the Reloop SPIN portable turntable.
The Jackery and the Rolls worked perfectly. With the Jackery, I went in with 85% and at the end of the 45+ minute mix, powering the turntables, the Pioneer DJM 450, and Bose S1 Pro portable speaker, I had about 68% left. I think I'm going to try the Jackery out with a pair of Technic 1200s and the Pioneer DJM 450.
As far as the Rolls, I tell the story on that at the end of the video.
You can see how everything is hooked up at the end of the video.
Little by little, I'm discovering lots of little pockets goodness here in Saginaw Michigan. I think I may shoot a video of me dropping a fishing line into the Saginaw River.
Let me know if you want to see more of this type of content.
Thanks for your support.
Love you All,
DJ Shorty B aka Detroit's Lost Sonn.
