The first watchmakers emigrate from England to the American colonies over 300 years ago, marking the true beginning of the American watch industry—well before the idea of mass production enters the minds of the Pitkin brothers and A. L. Dennison. This presentation focuses on 18th-century American watchmakers, their timepieces, and the environment in which they work.
Richard Newman is Chair Emeritus and a Silver Star Fellow of the NAWCC and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers. He currently leads the NAWCC British Horology Chapter (britishhorology.org) and the USA Section of the Antiquarian Horological Society based in London. Newman lectures and publishes numerous articles on early clocks and watches in the US and abroad, and hosts a research website on early watches, colonialwatches.com.
