Nieuwpoort-Bad wandelen aan de IJzermonding 10,6 km

De IJzer is de kortste van de drie Belgische rivieren die in zee uitmonden (de andere twee zijn de Maas en de Schelde) en de enige rivier die op Belgisch grondgebied in de zee uitmondt. De Schelde en de Maas monden in de zee uit in Nederland. De totale lengte van de IJzer bedraagt 78 kilometer, waarvan 45 in België. Het zoete water van de IJzer vermengt er zich met het zilte zeewater wat zorgt voor een biotoop voor planten en dieren.
Met de "De IJzermonding" wordt ook het natuurreservaat van ongeveer 130 ha in de Belgische kustgemeente Nieuwpoort bedoeld. Het gebied is eigendom van het Vlaams Gewest. Het ligt aan de rechteroever van de IJzer, ter hoogte van de monding van de rivier in de Noordzee.
Maar als eerste kennismaking met Nieuwpoort beperken wij ons op deze wandeling tot de linkerzijde van de IJzer: de promenade die van Nieuwpoort naar Nieuwpoort-Bad leidt. Prachtig om te observeren. Later gaan we zeker het natuurgebied aan de rechterkant ontdekken.
Talrijke watervogels zoals kokmeeuw, zwartkopmeeuw, kluut, bontbekplevier, strandplevier, visdief, dwergstern,.... en zoveel meer kan men hier waarnemen.
Ook is er een prachtige rustplek voor zeehonden. De dieren bewonderen doe je vanop een veilige afstand.

The Yser is the shortest of the three Belgian rivers that flow into the sea (the other two being the Meuse and the Schelde ) and the only river that flows into the sea on Belgian territory. The Schelde and the Maas flow into the sea in the Netherlands. The total length of the Yser is 78 kilometers, 45 of which in Belgium. The fresh water of the Yser mixes with the salty sea water, which provides a biotope for plants and animals.
The "De IJzermonding" also refers to the nature reserve of approximately 130 hectares in the Belgian coastal municipality of Nieuwpoort. The area is owned by the Flemish Region. It is located on the right bank of the Yser, near the mouth of the river in the North Sea.
But as a first acquaintance with Nieuwpoort, we limit ourselves on this walk to the left side of the Yser: the promenade that leads from Nieuwpoort to Nieuwpoort-Bad. Wonderful to observe. Later we will definitely discover the nature reserve on the right.
Numerous water birds such as black-headed gull, black-headed gull, avocet, ringed plover, sand plover, common tern, little tern, ... and so much more can be observed here.
There is also a beautiful resting place for seals. Admire the animals from a safe distance.
