Abstract Mark Making to Start a Blank Sketchbook

When you don't know what to create, or you’re not even sure how to start (or restart) making art — I’ll show you how I use abstract mark making to start a blank sketchbook page.

Being able to begin a new journal, or come back to a sketchbook full of blank pages is all about letting go of perfection and overthinking, and being willing to begin again with simple tools that allow you to simply play with your art supplies.

I’ll show you some tools and simple mixed media art supplies you can use to face the blank page without hesitation. No art experience is necessary. You can do this in any type of journal or sketchbook.

The blank page can be intimidating, especially if you haven't seen one in a while!
This is how to get past your fear of the blank page. You don't have to know what you're doing in order to create, and especially to start playing with whatever art supplies you have already.

When you go abstract with making marks, you don’t have to worry about making images. Experiment with with abstraction, play with mark making, and use abstract mark making as an opportunity to test out how your supplies work. This way of starting with a mixed media background is how I start most of my visual art journal pages.

Testing out your supplies is a great trick that you can play on your analytical perfectionistic brain and mind that wants to know what it's doing before it begins.

When you don't know how to start keeping an art journal, I recommend keeping a private sketchbook or visual journal as a way to practice your art. I think of this as art journaling for mental health.

Obliterating the blank page and working in my sketchbook is an important part of my creative practice. The moment I began making marks, pushing paint around and playing with my art supplies, I feel better.

When we're able to do our art as a creative practice, and a way to explore our inner life and feel better, it will naturally take us wherever we want to go in our creativity and art.

The place to start making your art is to have some simple tools to confront the blank pages in your sketchbook in a non-threatening way. This makes your creative practice so much easier.
