Handmade Carnatic Flute Review (E Scale): Are Indiran’s flutes the best Carnatic flutes?

Mr. Indiran has been making hand made carnatic flutes for more than 40 years. In this video our Carnatic Guru Sai Prabhakar reviews E (3 kattai) scale natural node flute.

According to Mr.Sai Prabhakar, our inhouse flute Guru, the flutes manufactured by Mr.Indiran are a great choice for carnatic flute players at all skill levels. All these flutes are designed at concert pitch of 440 Hz, made from specially chosen bamboo from Nilambur, Kerala. These flutes don’t have bends and are naturally treated so that they are built to last for a long duration.

Indiran’s flutes are used by many famous flautists, The flutes generally have a dark sun-burst colour and this is due to the heat treatment that is done on the flute to remove the moisture from the wood. The tone of the flute is sweet to hear.

Carnatic Flutes
Carnatic flutes are made from specific bamboo and this kind of bamboo is generally found only in parts of South India - Kanyakumari, Karnataka & Kerala. Carnatic flutes generally have natural nodes unlike Hindustani flute or plastic flutes, which are fitted with corks.

All Carnatic flutes have 8 holes including the blowing hole. For 15+ years and above generally as a good practise two flutes are recommended: D# and E note flutes. For more details you can read the following blog:
