Ben Arthur, also known as The Cobbler, is a mountain in the Arrochar Alps in Scotland. It is one of the most popular and challenging mountains for walkers and climbers, despite not being a Munro (a mountain over 3,000 feet). It has a distinctive shape with three rocky summits that supposedly resemble a cobbler at work (I can't see that resemblance at all though).
The Cobbler is located near the village of Arrochar on the shore of Loch Long. It can be reached by various routes, but the most common one starts from a car park on the A83 road and follows a well-made path through the forest and up the hillside. The path then crosses a stream and continues along the valley of Allt a’ Bhalachain. There are two most popular paths to reach all peaks, the easier one is to the right. It goes around the mountain and is easier but with less stunning views. We prefer the left path which is more difficult, with fun scrambles and amazing views. Regardless of chosen trail the whole walk should take from 5 to 6 hours.
The summit of Ben Arthur offers spectacular views of Loch Lomond, Loch Long as well as surrounding mountains: Beinn Ime, Beinn Narnain, Beinn an Lochain and located slightly further to the east Ben Lomond. On the middle peak stands a famous rock structure called The Needle, which can be climbed on for a dare. It is not an attraction for people with vertigo and it is not recommended on the wet day, as the rocks of the narrow ledge you need to scramble can get treacherously slippery. The north peak is even more difficult to reach and is a popular destination for mountain climbers.
Since The Cobbler is one of the most popular mountains in Scotland, we recommend start as early as possible, because the car park in Arrochar fills in quite quickly in the morning, despite the fact it is quite large. Also, it is a way to avoid crowds on the top. We started the climb with the sun still hiding behind mountains, but the car park was already half full. There was just two other people on the summit with us, but when we started to climb down it was starting to get really busy.
