Gaming consoles are more expensive than ever — and for a lot of players, the barrier to entry is getting ridiculous.
In this video, I make the case that Nintendo should bring back the DS form factor as a lower-cost alternative to modern consoles. A new DS-style system in the $150–$250 price range could give players access to Nintendo Switch Online apps, select lower-end Switch games, and finally provide a clean solution for DS and 3DS game preservation.

Dual screens
Compact, durable hardware
Access to NSO retro libraries
Support for select Switch titles
Optional physical game card slots for Switch, DS, and 3DS
As hardware prices climb and digital-only gaming becomes the norm, Nintendo’s absence in the affordable handheld space feels more noticeable than ever. Is bringing back the DS realistic — or just wishful thinking?
