Acclaimed ABC correspondent Sean Dorney spent the majoriy of his working life covering Papua New Guinea and the South West Pacific. He was the ABC's voice from PNG and was often called on to interpret and explain sometimes confusing events to a western audience.
In this lecture, Sean provides an amusing and light hearted summary of his life in PNG, arriving in 1974 on secondment to the National Broadcasting Commission, just prior to the country's independence in 1975.
Sean points out that contrary to the opinion of Australian polititians at the time, the independent PNG has turned out to be remarkably stable and democratic, albeit with a quirky local PNG overlay. Over the years, Sean has had the rare distinction of being both deported and awarded an MBE, by the same PNG governmant minister,
Sean is a fellow of the Lowy Institute and is the author of numerous articles and publications including "Papua New Guinea,: People, Politics and Hisory since 1973", "The Sandline Affair - Politics and Mercenaries and the Bougainville Crisis" and his most recent book "The Embarassed Colonialist".
