Chichester Psalms: Movement 1 (Bernstein) | Atlanta Master Chorale

Atlanta Master Chorale performed Leonard Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms" at our "Same Light, Different Lanterns: Sacred Music from Around the World" concert on March 15 & 16, 2024 at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts on the campus of Emory University. This is the first movement with text from Psalm 108:2 and Psalm 100.

Every summer the Cathedral of Chichester, in Sussex, England, joins forces with its neighbors, Winchester and Salisbury, to produce a music festival. For its 1965 Festival, Leonard Bernstein was commissioned to write these Psalms. Premiered July 31, 1965 at Chichester Cathedral.

Awake, psaltery and harp:
I will rouse the dawn!

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord all ye lands.
Serve the Lord with gladness.
Come before His presence with singing.
Know ye that the Lord, He is God.
It is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves.
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.
For the Lord is good, His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endureth to all generations.
