Next year, Australia's only nuclear research reactor, OPAL, will undergo essential maintenance and upgrades. This will increase the performance of scientific instruments and ensure the reliability of nuclear medicine supply, silicon irradiations, and more.
A critical component of the planned maintenance is replacing the cold neutron source, a technology that slows down neutrons from the OPAL reactor for specific instruments. The current technology is 15 years old and has reached the end of its service life. With this upgrade, we expect a 5-10% increase in performance.
In this video interview, Dr Anna Sokolova explains what happens at the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering and how these instruments are used in wide-ranging research from COVID-19, energy, food science, quantum computing and more.
The planned shutdown ensures that Australia’s only nuclear research reactor can continue to deliver benefits to science, health, and industry.
