In light of the overwhelming appreciation for this video, I have taken the initiative to include English subtitles, translated from Azerbaijani, my mother tongue. This effort is intended to bring the profound beauty and mystical essence of Seyyid Azim Shirvani’s poetry to a broader audience.
This mesmerizing performance was recorded live during the 2019 Morgenland Festival in Osnabrück. Original video credits:

Interpretation of the Poem
This mystical poem by Seyyid Azim Shirvani eloquently explores themes of longing, divine beauty, and spiritual transcendence. It uses classical imagery to navigate the tension between earthly desires and spiritual aspirations.
The poet begins by pleading with a friend not to lead him into isolation, symbolized by the wilderness, as the absence of the “moon” (beloved) leaves life devoid of joy. Captivated by ethereal beauty, he laments the complications of earthly existence and reflects on the overwhelming emotions evoked by love.
As the poem unfolds, the poet describes the beloved’s reflection in his heart, stirring dreams and desires that alter his soul. He further expresses the pain of abandonment, likening himself to a shadow of his former self. Despite his struggles, the pursuit of this divine love elevates him spiritually, likened to a sacred journey toward enlightenment.
