Nelly SUED by the St. Lunatics over unpaid royalties connected to the Country Grammar album. Claimed they wrote much of the album without proper compensation and now it is time to pay up.
The suit alleges that Nelly didn't properly credit them for contributions on the album, one of the bestselling rap albums ever with more than 10 million copies sold. St. Louis native Cornell Haynes Jr., better known as Nelly, has been sued by his former music group, the St. Lunatics, over alleged uncredited and unpaid work on his 2000 bestselling album "Country Grammar."
Nelly’s legal representatives are likely to argue that the suit falls under copyright ownership and not infringement, thus voiding the group’s claims to compensation. Nelly and his legal team have yet to release a statement regarding the St. Lunatics’ pending lawsuit.
Nelly is facing a lawsuit from alleged childhood buddies who say they were cut out of writing credits and payments on the rapper hit 2000 album “Country Grammar.” The plaintiffs are Ali Jones (Ali), Torhi Harper (Murphy Lee), Robert Kyjuan (Kyjuan) and Lavell Webb (City Spud). The suit was filed Wednesday in federal court in New York.
Jones said he and Nelly were childhood friends growing up in St. Louis in the 1990s and formed St. Lunatics together with the other plaintiffs, Murphy Lee, Torhi Harper, Robert Kyjuan, and Lavell Webb. Nelly in 2000 put out his solo record for Universal Music Group using songs the group had written together, including “Batter Up” and the eponymous “Country Grammar,” the complaint says.
“Haynes would assure them as ‘friends’ he would never prevent them from receiving the financial success they were entitled to as writers,” the complaint says. “Plaintiffs eventually discovered that not only did they not receive any credit as authors and/or creators of the Original Compositions, but that Defendant Haynes, and others, took full credit for creating the Original Compositions contained in the Infringing Album.”
