For Mikasa, the feelings Jean use to show to her fade away when him and Armin get closer. Jealous of being rejected, she blames Armin for everything and poisons him. However, she didn't expect Jean to go crazy with grief.

On Jean's part, he has been hurt too many times. First his friend (and lover) Marco died in a murder. Slowly getting over Marco's death, Jean begins to develop feelings for Armin when suddenly he dies under mysterious circumstances. Not being able to handle life, Jean decided life isn't worth living anymore.
