The USS Midway was commissioned on September 10, 1945, just days after the official end of World War II, making it the first aircraft carrier to be commissioned after the war. It was a significant development in naval warfare, as it was the largest ship in the world at the time. Designed to project American naval power across vast oceans, the Midway was part of a new era of super-carriers that were intended to maintain U.S. dominance in the Pacific and beyond.
Though it missed direct involvement in World War II combat, the Midway became a key asset in post-war military strategies. In 1947, the ship played a crucial role in Operation Sandy, when it launched a captured German V-2 rocket from its deck, marking the first time a missile of this kind was fired from a moving ship, symbolizing the rapid technological advancements of the time. This operation demonstrated the United States' growing interest in missile technology and the strategic use of naval aviation for nuclear deterrence.
Throughout the late 1940s, the Midway served in a variety of capacities, patrolling the Mediterranean and contributing to the post-war stabilization efforts. It represented the shift in naval priorities as the Cold War began to reshape global alliances and military power. This period set the stage for the carrier's continued evolution, eventually becoming one of the most iconic aircraft carriers of the 20th century.
