Cyrene’s population in antiquity included many dark‑skinned Africans—indigenous Libyans and “Ethiopians” (in Greek usage, broadly sub‑Saharan or very dark Africans)—living alongside lighter‑skinned Greeks and later Romans. The city sat in Cyrenaica (eastern Libya), a North African region where ancient authors and modern scholarship alike situate Black and brown Africans north of the Sahara well before and during Greek and Roman rule.
