My father has always been someone who has been blind to his own narcissism. As a younger man who believed he had control over his wife, children, money, health, and life, he was quick-tempered and showed little empathy for his children's emotions. Today, as he faces the winter of his life, he has begun to fill with great despair, and as a result, he expects his children to be able to offer him the compassion he never had for us.

I wanted to encourage those of you who, like me, have to care for elderly, narcissistic parents who require tremendous empathy despite never having compassion for you--their child. It is pretty challenging to care for a parent who seemed to care little for how you felt and did not know how to show up when needed.

As my father ages and his life presents with changes he cannot control, he fills with more and more despair. His mind is full of regrets, and he no longer has the confidence to discard us as he once did. Today, he needs us to take care of him; if we don't, my siblings and I are not sure what he may be capable of.

I am learning to LET GO of what I cannot control, and I hope this video helps you let go too...

Children of narcissistic parents, who are now suffering from codependency symptoms, may struggle to learn how to love themselves. Narcissists tend to attract people pleasers or codependent personalities.  Because codependents are eager to please and seek outside validation, they are easy targets for narcissistic lovers and friends. 

Learning how to love yourself after a narcissistic relationship is difficult, but it is possible with the right codependency recovery tools.  It is even possible to find love after codependency.
Adult children of alcoholics and narcissistic parents are at a greater risk of depression, anxiety, addiction and toxic relationships.
