Today, we are discussing security camera surge protection, and how to protect CCTV cameras from lightning (direct or indirect) strikes, inductive loads, poor wiring, and the power grid itself.
Many clients think a simple surge protection strip is all they have to do to protect their system - but did you know that surges can come from your cameras, enter your recorder or switch, and damage other devices?
In this episode of In the Trenches Roundtable, our installation panel discusses security camera surge protection. Power surges can damage just about any electrical device - but electronics like computers, camera systems, and TVs are especially vulnerable.
We highly recommend putting your NVR / switches on an AC Surge Protection device that's properly rated for the voltage you are dealing with. Surge protectors are rated in "joules" the higher the number, the more energy it can absorb in a surge situation. Note that this is not a "power strip" - some people refer to ordinary power strips as surge protectors, but this is false. Not all power strips are surge protectors, some will provide zero protection.
A surge protector is designed to absorb a certain amount of electricity to keep your devices safe. If you are looking for a surge protector for your camera system, shop with us here - https://www.getscw.com/cctv-accessori...
AC Surge protectors will turn off your power when there is a voltage spike, "Power Loss" is rarely a clean on and off, it's often quick bursts of off, then back on, then off again, all within a couple of seconds. These types of power losses can still cause damage to your security system and electronics.
When you combine surge protection with an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) then you now have a battery that holds extra energy so you can do a "graceful" shutdown of your devices.
If you are in a part of the world where there is a lot of lightning (ie: South East USA, Florida, etc) then you should consider an "inline ethernet surge protector" which will protect your NVR/video storage when a camera gets hit by lightning. Surges from a camera can travel through the switch/NVR into other cameras and onto HDMI ports on televisions and monitors - damaging thousands of dollars in equipment.
Surge protectors are used to safeguard your security system from power surges. Security camera CCTV surge protectors can be used to safeguard your security system (and other equipment) from power surges. They work by providing a protective layer between the electrical current and the camera, which makes them more secure.
Security camera surge protectors are devices that provide protection from voltage spikes to connected equipment. They are designed to protect electronic equipment from power surges, which can damage them. Surge protectors for security camera systems don't just protect from power surges, but also help with the prevention of video loss due to power outages.
Lightning is an unpredictable event. It can strike at any time and it can damage your property. The most common type of lightning damage is to electronics, and that includes surveillance cameras. Surge protectors are a must-have for protecting your CCTV cameras from lightning. A surge protector is a device that protects electrical devices from sudden voltage spikes in the power line. You may be wondering why you need one if you already have a camera with built-in protection, but surge protectors offer much better protection than what’s built into the camera.

We know that surge protectors are an essential piece of equipment for any CCTV camera setup. They offer protection from power surges, spikes, and other power-related incidents that can damage your camera. The importance of using a surge protector to protect CCTV cameras from lightning is that it protects the equipment from being damaged by power surges or spikes. It also offers protection from other power-related incidents that could damage your camera.
Because lightning can severely damage most CCTV camera video systems, surge protectors are a necessary investment for CCTV cameras. They protect from surges, spikes, and other electrical anomalies that may occur.
