In this tutorial, we’ll learn how to model a hand sketch in Grasshopper while covering essential foundations for architects and designers. This step-by-step workflow shows how to bring your architectural hand drawings into Rhino and transform them into digital 3D geometry ready for fabrication.
We’ll start by importing and scaling a hand sketch into Rhino, tracing the main shapes with polylines, and preparing the curves. Then, we’ll move into Grasshopper to assign curves, use the Graft function to separate data, and apply frames and rectangles to shape the geometry. You’ll learn how to use Sweep1 to generate forms, fix open faces with Cap Holes, and clean up your model for export.
Finally, we’ll export the result as an STL file with the correct tolerance, making the model ready for 3D printing or digital fabrication. By the end, you’ll understand how to connect your design thinking by hand with computational modeling in Grasshopper.
