Struggling with Hardy Weinberg? Need a quick refresher on how Hardy Weinberg equations work? What is the point of the Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium?
In this video I'll show you how to do a Hardy Weinberg practice problem for your Biology or AP Biology class.
Use these notes to help you as you follow along with the video:
Hardy Weinberg equilibrium as a model for describing and predicting allele frequencies in non-evolving populations.
Hardy Weinberg represents “ideal” conditions for a population that is not changing. Natural populations DO change, so Hardy Weinberg provides a baseline to gauge the degree of change.
Here are the two Hardy Weinberg Equations:
p + q = 1
p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1
p = frequency of dominant alleles in the population
q = frequency of recessive alleles in the population
p2 = frequency of homozygous dominant genotypes in the population
2pq = frequency of heterozygotes in the population
q2 = frequency of homozygous recessive genotypes in the population
