Skyhooks were huge in Australia, especially with their albums Living in the 70's and Ego is Not a Dirty Word. Their style mixed glam rock, satire, and very Aussie storytelling, which made them both controversial and wildly popular. The classic Skyhooks lineup - the ones most people remember from their 1970s heyday were:
Graeme "Shirley" Strachan – lead vocals
Greg Macainsh – bass guitar, primary songwriter
Red Symons – guitar, backing vocals
Bob "Bongo Starr" Starkie – guitar
Imants "Freddie" Strauks – drums

Earlier versions of the band also included Peter Starkie (Bob's brother) on guitar before Red Symons joined. After "Shirley" left Skyhooks in 1978, the band kept going with lineup changes, and Wilbur Wilde joined Skyhooks in the early 1980s for a while, playing saxophone.

Shirley Strachan, the lead singer of Skyhooks, died on August 29, 2001, at the age of 49. The cause of his death was a helicopter crash. Strachan, who had been a fixed-wing pilot for many years, was training to get his helicopter pilot's license. He planned to buy a helicopter to take his family and friends on surfing trips. On a solo training flight near Mount Archer, Queensland, his Bell 47G helicopter encountered mountain turbulence. This turbulence caused the rotor to sever the tailboom, leading to the crash.
