Rescuing of five baby storks after their parents died.

We were informed by villagers about five orphan baby storks, whose parents had died from electrocution at least four days earlier, leaving them without food, water or any protection from the heat of the Greek summer sun, and they were rapidly deteriorating.

Following the call, we rushed over to the village and found the babies, still in the nest, but too young to fly. With the kind assistance of Karditsa electricity company and their cherry-picker lift, and under telephone guidance from Maria Ganoti from Anima organisation, we managed to bring four of the baby storks down from their precarious and unprotected nest, while the fifth had recently fallen out before our arrival, and had suffered some broken feathers, but was essentially ok.

Having recovered them, severely dehydrated and hungry, we moved them to the safety of our friend, Marinos Roussos's, property, where they were initially kept in kennels so we could check them over and monitor them closely. Two of the five needed more specialist care than we could provide, so we transferred them to Anina in Athens, but the remaining three lived free in the covered yard for about a month, and went from recovery to developing and growing, and were soon strong enough to attempt their first attempts to fly!

We were even fortunate to be there to see their first attempts, which was such a wonderful experience to share, we felt like proud parents! At first they did short, low flights, but within a few weeks they were getting stronger and higher, and we knew it was time for our babies to fly free! We were so proud and happy to see them healthy, happy and free, flying off to their own lives, just as it should be!
