Ep. 144 FINISHING THE ST. MARK MOSAIC AND SUNFLOWER MOSAICS TWO WAYS!

0:45 This week I start by laying in the sky on the left side of St. Mark. So easy since the pieces are ready to go! I am using Laticrete 254 thinset as the adhesive over mesh. This mosaic will be installed on the exterior of a church, along with three others.
2:35 Next, I move to the wing on the right, making the main spine and then adding the feathers. I've got it down to a system now and it goes pretty quickly. Dark gray, gray, white, repeat.
4:16 I prep two different wood flower cut-outs from a craft store. I use Kilz Primer/sealer to cover the edges and top. It takes several coats to cover them.
5:20 The big sunflower is my next project, and I build up the center with a piece of GoBoard I cut out with an exacto knife. A bunch of beads are going in the middle, so I show some that I select for this mosaic. I pull a few bins from my bin bin, including black, brown, dark red and some that look like seeds but are polished stones.
8:08 Crumpled aluminum foil is used to bridge the height gap. I glue it in place and then Apoxie Sculpt will go over the top.
9:17 The cabochon is placed in the center and then I waste a bunch of time doing some unnecessary nonsense step. Faceted beads are added next to the cab, and then the irridized irregular seed beads in black.
TIP: TIE OFF BEADS AS YOU GO!!!
10:49 Using wheeled nippers, I cut up a bunch of glass rods. The fatter rods are cut in fourths. Then I start imbedding them in the black Apoxie Sculpt. I work as quickly as possible since the Apoxie sets up relatively quickly.
13:15 After adding a ring of beads, I add the black glass nuggets, one at a time, and then the dark red. The palette of yellows is selected.
14:35 I show how I cut large feather cuts, then cut a large inventory and fill my tray with the four different colors!
15:40 The sunflower kicks off with a yellow and brown glass that is added next to the center. Then the bright yellow is added about halfway down each petal before I call it quits!
16:44 Time to finish up St. Mark! It feels so good to check this off my list! YAY!!! Now I just have three more...
18:57 I started another sunflower, and I am almost finished! The adhesive is GE Advanced Silicone on a glass substrate from Dollar Tree.
TIP: USE CLEAR SHELF PAPER TO CREATE A MOSAIC PATTERN PIECE. This method is a bit slow, but pretty accurate.
22:20 The next day, the smaller sunflower mosaic is grouted with Mapei sanded grout in black. It is a soft black. After I spread it in every interstice, I wipe off the top and give it 25 minutes on the timer to haze over before the final cleaning. Then I show it off in the bright sunlight!
