In this episode of Learners on Location, we hear from Richard Burack, MD, PhD, professor and vice chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Hannah Bell, MD, PhD, co-chief resident in Pathology, as they reflect on what it means to train for meaningful, impactful work in graduate medical education at the University of Rochester.
Filmed on campus, their conversation explores the idea that graduate medical training isn’t just about mastering techniques or completing experiments. It’s about learning how to think, collaborate, and contribute to work that matters. They talk about curiosity, persistence, and the long arc of scientific discovery, and how today’s questions can shape the future of medicine and research.
They also make a stop at the Memorial Art Gallery, which they describe as a favorite place to slow down, recharge, and engage with culture outside of their academic work.
They also discuss the culture of mentorship, the value of intellectual freedom, and what it feels like to be part of a research community that supports both professional development and personal well-being.
