"The 14th Amendment: Citizenship & Belonging in America" delves into the profound and ongoing impact of this amendment, particularly its guarantee of birthright citizenship, on American identity. Featuring renowned historians Mae Ngai, a specialist on citizenship, and Harold Holzer, an Abraham Lincoln authority, this panel explored the 14th Amendment's complex history, its role in defining citizenship, and its relevance to contemporary debates about belonging. We examine how the promise of equal protection has been both realized and challenged throughout American history. Furthermore, we draw upon examples from the stories preserved by the Tenement Museum, bringing historical legal debates into the context of the lived experiences of immigrants and citizens.
This event was co-sponsored by the Hunter College Department of Sociology.
