Pastor Aloysius Bugingo is a prominent Ugandan born-again Christian pastor, media owner, and founder of the House of Prayer Ministries International (HPMI), headquartered at Canaan Land in Makerere–Kikoni, Kampala.
Background:
Born: November 25, 1972, in Masaka, Uganda.
Heritage: Of Rwandese descent; raised by his maternal grandparents.
Early Life: Moved to Kampala as a young man and worked as a hawker before entering ministry.
Ministry & Media Empire:
Founder and senior pastor of House of Prayer Ministries International (HPMI).
Founder of the Salt Media Group, which includes Salt FM and Salt TV.
Known for attracting large crowds and broadcasting his services widely across Uganda.
Education:
Earned a Bachelor’s degree in Theology in 2019 from Kayiwa International University (also linked with United Graduate College and Seminary, USA).
Controversies:
Bible controversy: Publicly condemned some Bible versions, claiming they omitted key scriptures, and allegedly burned some copies. This drew backlash from other Christian leaders and was subject to court action.
Feuds: Regularly clashes with other religious leaders and has made inflammatory public statements.
Church vs. state tensions: Criticized by leaders of mainstream denominations including the Church of Uganda.
Personal Life:
Was married to Teddy Naluswa, with whom he had children. Their separation was highly publicized.
Later entered into a traditional marriage with Susan Makula in 2021, which also led to public and legal debate over whether it was a violation of Uganda’s marriage laws.
Assassination Attempt:
In January 2024, survived a gun attack in Kampala. His bodyguard was killed, while Bugingo sustained minor injuries.
