I am Growing a Glorious Garden (2016)
SA, piano
This light-hearted poem by American poet Jack Prelutsky, tells of someone planting a garden with various musical instruments. This musical garden encompasses the full range of instruments: winds, strings and percussion, and even pianos, harps and guitars.
“I am Growing a Glorious Garden” was written for En Masse (Westlake Girls High School) and conductor Vanessa Kay.
The text begins…
I am growing a glorious garden
resplendent with trumpets and flutes.
I am pruning euphonium bushes.
I am watering piccolo shoots.
my tubas and tambourines flourish,
surrounded by saxophone reeds.
I am planting trombones and pianos,
and sowing sweet sousaphone seeds.
