Wasp Spray is Not a Substitute for Pepper Spray
Gun violence this fall at schools and colleges across the nation helps keep a contemporary legend alive. One version of the legend tells of a church receptionist working in a high-risk area who kept a can of wasp spray on her desk for self-defense. The legend, usually spread by email, suggests wasp spray draws less attention than a can of pepper spray and is effective against violence.
Unlike urban legends, which by and large don’t result in bodily harm, just odd behavior in people trying to avoid whatever danger the legend promotes, the advice in this email—if followed-- can result in significant harm. Should someone follow the email’s advice it could cost you your own live or the life of a loved one.
There are approximately 1 million uniformed Police Officers in the United States that carry O.C. Spray commonly called “pepper spray”. Not one of these 1 million carries “Wasp Spray”.
Because it is a violation of federal law to use a pesticide in a manner that differs from the product labeling (and it is labeled for wasps, hornets, yellow jackets) in the off chance that there were a reaction like blindness you could have big problems.
There are a number of O.C. Sprays that will shoot 15 to 18 feet and shoot at least 7-10 bursts. Included are: Mace Brand Pepper Spray Gun, Kimber Pepper Blaster, Mace Brand Pepper Spray Magnum 10% Pepper Gel, SABRE Red Pepper Gel - Police Strength. The should be worn on your belt or in a holster, not put in a purse. In the event of criminal attack, you may have only 1 to 3 seconds to retrieve the O.C. spray and fire.
In the first clip, which took place in August 2010, on the video, you can see that “wasp spray” has absolutely no effect on reporter George Colli and photographer Alan Chaniewski two Fox CT journalists. They were assaulted by the husband of a woman who was at Superior Court who sprayed them with wasp and hornet spray. The journalist, thinking it was “window washer fluid” went across the road to an Enfield firehouse to be washed off and for first aid.
In the second clip Police in Hagerstown, Maryland, say officers pepper-sprayed a 15-year-old girl and charged her with assault and disorderly conduct after her bicycle hit a car and she fled. After being caught she was highly combative, refused to come back to the scene and when police tried to escort her back she resisted. When placed in the police are, she refused to pull her feet in, keeping the doors from closing. She is warned two times that she will be sprayed. Listen to her screaming, even with the car doors closed. The full-length video is on this channel but here is the link:
