US Opens Door For China To Initiate Trade Deal? | White House Says “China Must Act First” | CLRCUT

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on April 15 that President Donald Trump remains open to striking a trade agreement with China—but insisted that Beijing must make the first move.

"The ball is in China's court: China needs to make a deal with us, we don't have to make a deal with them," Leavitt told reporters during an afternoon press briefing. "The president has made it quite clear that he's open to a deal with China."

Her comments came as Washington and global markets continue to react to the president’s latest round of sweeping tariffs, intensifying concerns over international trade tensions.

Leavitt’s briefing also addressed the escalating controversy surrounding the Trump administration’s decision to freeze $2.2 billion in grants to Harvard University over its handling of campus activism. Asked whether the president is considering revoking Harvard’s tax-exempt status, Leavitt said Trump wants the university to acknowledge and apologize for what the administration has called “egregious anti-Semitism.”

"When it comes to Harvard, as I said, the president has been quite clear, they must follow federal law," she said. "He also wants to see Harvard apologize, and Harvard should apologize for the egregious anti-Semitism that took place on their college campus against Jewish American students."

Harvard, on April 14, publicly rejected multiple demands from the Trump administration, characterizing them as attempts to cede control of the university to a conservative government increasingly critical of left-leaning academic institutions.
