Casa de São Lourenço, situated at the pinnacle of the Zêzere Glacial Valley, is a serene mountain retreat fashioned around the historic Pousada de São Lourenço in Manteigas. Originating in the 1940s, this establishment stands as one of Portugal's pioneering hotels. After falling into disrepair, the sleeping beauty lay derelict for years until 2018 when Isabel Costa and her husband João Tomás stumbled upon it and decided to rescue and raise it from the ashes. The couple's primary focus lay on preserving the rich history of the original structure and its seamless integration into the surrounding landscape - a unique vantage point nestled in the heart of the Serra da Estrela Nature Reserve, boasting some of the country's loftiest elevations and graced by winter snowfall. Blending contemporary design and interiors curated by Maria Keil, Casa de São Lourenço pays homage to burel wool, a local textile crafted in a nearby vibrant brick warehouse a local textile made in a bustling brick warehouse nearby, also revived by Isabel and João. In recent years, Isabel and João have wholeheartedly dedicated their efforts to the rescue and preservation of this region, embodying resolute determination, a clearly defined sense of mission, and, most notably, a profound commitment to the cherished local communities.
