Will Parent-raised Parrotlets Ever Be Tame?

Parent-rasied #Parrotlets: In this video I answer two questions
1. Will parent-raised babies ever be tame?
2. In a decent cage, do they never need to come out?

Sometimes we only have a chance at a parent-raised parrot or we want to give a home to a parrot in need, and they aren't tame. In the case of Parrotlets, can they become tame? Or can they just live in a cage so that they decorate our homes as we provide what they need to live a life together?

Raising Parrotlets
When I breed Parrotlets, I pull them (take them out of their nest) when they are opening their eyes. This way they become accustomed to seeing people and they associate them with being fed and cared for.

Parents teach their babies more than how to survive. They also teach them about dangers or friends. If you were looking at adopting a pair of adult parrotlets, like the person who submitted the questions, then you want to keep in mind the fact that you don't know what the Parrotlets have already experienced. If they are curious about people and have been treated well, then it could be that they will be interested in people. On the other hand, if they haven't been treated well, there can be more emotional distance to overcome in trying to forge a relationship.

In any case, the one way to maximize your ability to tame a parrot is by spending time with them, a lot of time. Once upon a time when parrotlets were first being imported to the US, there were only un-tame parrots available. People only had the choice to take on a parrot that had already had a negative experience: they had already been captured, removed from their home and contained.

When you think of it this way, taming a pair of Parrotlets now is easy in comparison to what it would have been like back then.
