1999 'FATHEAD' NEWMAN "Hard Times" w/ GROVER WASHINGTON in Philly

In 1958 David 'Fathead' Newman's alto saxophone solo on "Hard Times" was recorded during his long-time stint with Ray Charles and then joyfully emanated from jukeboxes world-wide, becoming iconic. In this clip he's wailing that tune on tenor and the reaction from the crowd is invigorating.

The annual Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival in Philadelphia has as its namesake a jazz elder, a saxophonist who many expect to be a DRUMMER. No, this Tony Williams is not the late, great percussionist of the same name. For the clip you're
watching, apologies are in order for Tony and the other musicians whose solos were not recorded because the videographer ran out of tape as Grover Washington's solo was ending.

Tony Williams is firmly dedicated to the key concept in his festival's identity: "Scholarship". Here's a paragraph from his web site - http://www.tonywilliamssaxman.com -

"He also had a passion to 'keep jazz alive' so it was not enough for Tony just to be a professional musician. He had to give back and he did that in a way that can not be matched by many. Tony Williams started a jazz theory and music program in his school, the Ada H. Lewis Middle School Jazz Band. Not long after, he started his own jazz theory and music program that is now known as the Mount Airy Cultural Center, Inc., of which he is the founder and director."

This festival was an annual event which had taken place in Philadelphia every year since 1990. Unfortunately, it is no longer being produced.
