ASC Builds Custom Wind Tunnels! A short video featuring Dr. Kevin Linfield, P.E.

Airflow Sciences designs and fabricates custom wind tunnels for aerodynamic testing. Test section size can range from small to large, depending on your needs. We can design the tunnel and provide drawings for you or your contractor to build, or we can manufacture and provide a turn-key system with fan control, data logging, force balance, and other instrumentation. Custom tunnels with environmental control such as temperature and humidity are possible, and even rain and fog simulation capabilities are offered.

Featured here is a custom wind tunnel featuring a 36 x 36 inch test section, 75 mph velocity range, and water droplet injection for rain and fog simulations.

When modeling urban centers, wind tunnels can become quite large. Shown here is a tunnel with a 48 x 96 inch test section for environmental flow testing around a scale model of buildings in a portion of downtown Detroit, Michigan. The tunnel includes a 360-degree turntable to allow any incoming wind direction to be analyzed, along with appropriate spires and surface roughness generators to represent the Earth boundary layer for wind approaching the buildings.

Some custom wind tunnels feature a vertical test section. This unit has high temperature capability (up to 550oF), is insulated with Pyrex viewing windows, and includes particulate injection to evaluate erosion and pluggage of screens, filters, and other products.

ASC's own wind tunnel features a 17 x 34 inch test section, 130 mph velocity range, and is compliant with US EPA test protocols for velocity probe calibration.

And finally, ASC builds a variety of small wind tunnels for aerodynamic experiments and flow testing. Tunnels can include force balance, turntable, pressure taps, particulate injection, gas injection, or other physical elements depending on the test needs.
