Meera Bhajan ‘Ud Ja Re Kaga’, presented as an Indian fusion music piece. This well known bhajan was sung by the legendary classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar. It was later made popular by Hridaynath Mangeshkar’s 1974 album ‘Chala Vahi Des’ for which he composed the bhajan in Hindustani raga Bhinna Shadaj, also known as raga Kaushik Dhwani, and was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Here the bhajan, with accompanying piano harmonies, takes on the contemporary hues of world music, while traditional cymbals and flute bring in Indian classical music tones, with Tabla beats providing rhythm and tempo.
‘Ud Ja Re Kaga’ evokes lingering hallowed emotions. Meera Bai’s lyrics are an expression of pain and separation; she asks the crow in the forest to fly away for it brings back memories of her beloved Krishna, whose departure she is lamenting. Team Vaishnavi Kondapalli (Vocal), Ashwin Seshadri (Piano), Anirudh Sharma (Tabla) and Mahesh Raghvan (Music Arrangement) present this bhajan of sublime devotion.
