Things to Do in Daragaon (দারাগাঁও)
Daragaon (দারাগাঁও), even though a small village, offers a plethora of activities to do in and around it. One can walk through the village to get to know the villagers and witness numerous blooming Himalayan flowers in every household.
How to Reach Dara Gaon
Bagdogra is the closest airport at a distance of 90 km whereas NJP is the nearest Railway station at a distance of 82 km. One can easily get a hired car from Bagdogra Airport, NJP or Siliguri to comfortably reach the village.
Where to Stay in this Village
Homestays are there to stay in this village. The local villagers usually offer accommodation at their houses to the visitors. However, all the modern facilities like electricity, comfortable beds, a natural showering option into nature, western washrooms etc. are there. So, staying here will not be a problem at all.
Silk Route Sikkim:
Actually Silk Route Journey starts from Kalimpong. One can visit Sillery Gaon, Ramdhura, Daragaon in that area. Then from there you can travel to Silk Route Sikkim places like Zuluk, Lungthung, etc.
Dzuluk or Zuluk or Jhuluk or Jaluk is a small hamlet located at a height of 9,400 feet (2,900 m) on the rugged terrain of the lower Himalayas in Rongli Subdivision of Pakyong District, which lies in the Indian state Sikkim (Pincode 737131). This place is relatively an emerging and offbeat destination in East Sikkim. Today it is a tourist destination for the view of the eastern Himalayan mountain range including the Kanchenjunga.
The village of Lunghthung-Dhupidara located at almost 11,500 feet is perched on a hilltop with panoramic views of Mt. Kanchenjungha on one side and the winding roads of Zuluk on the other. Thambi View Point which offers a great bird’s eye view of Mt. Kanchenjungha and the whole of Eastern Himalayas is within a kilometre of Lunthung–Dhupidara village. From January to April the whole of Lungthung–Dhupidara is virtually buried in snow and the only colour you can see is white. The mountain slopes and valleys are drenched in a riot of colours around Lungthung–Dhupidara from July to September when the wild flowers bloom. There are few homestays in Lungthung–Dhupidara which has recently been made available to the tourists. The home-stays are clean with all basic comforts and attached Western Bathrooms and great views of snow capped mountains.
The tour covers part of an ancient trade route passing through the high passes of Nathula and Jelep La on the India Tibet (China) border. The route connected Eastern India with the famous Silk Route of Central Asia. The route also had strategic importance. In 1888 the rugged mountain served as a battleground between the Tibetans and the British. A small graveyard with a war memorial stands in the village of Gnathang (Nathanag) in memory of the fallen British soldiers. In 1903–04, this route was used by Francis Younghusband to invade Tibet and move onwards to Lhasa.
