Füssen is a charming town in Bavaria, southern Germany, near the Austrian border. Best known as the gateway to the famous Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles, it sits nestled in the Alps along the Lech River, with stunning mountain views, colorful old town streets, and a peaceful atmosphere. It also marks the end of the Romantic Road, a scenic route through historic towns and fairy-tale castles.
But in this video — from some of my past notes — we're exploring a different side of Füssen, including a quiet stop at a cliffside memorial. This hidden bust honors Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, an Austrian archduke who became emperor far from home, only to be captured and executed in 1867. Carved into the rock near Partnach Gorge, it’s a solemn tribute to a royal dreamer’s tragic fate.
