Aloha! 🌈 We are Alexus and Michi: PhD students and an international (Mexican American German) LGBT couple at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, located in Honolulu, Hawaii (Oahu). Alexus is a fourth year PhD student studying Biological Oceanography (Marine Ecology, Deep-sea Biology) and Michi is a fifth year PhD student studying Second Language Studies (Applied Linguistics, Language Teaching).

In today’s video, Alexus will be sharing her best tips, tricks, and advice for writing an outstanding Statement of Purpose, Statement of Objectives, Statement of Intent, or Personal Statement for your graduate school applications! 🎓 In this video, Alexus will be going over what exactly is a Statement of Purpose (SOP)/Personal Statement, what the purpose of this essay is, and how to write one for your graduate school application. In a few steps, Alexus will tell you the importance of doing your research prior to applying to graduate school programs (Masters and PhD), how to structure and write your statement of purpose, as well as a detailed list of what to include in your personal statement essay. Alexus will explain the importance of a compelling introduction/hook, introducing your short term and long term goals, why you want to get a Masters or PhD, your research interests and academic history, your relevant background (Intellectual Merit, Research Experience, and Broader Impacts/Extracurriculars), and how to align your research interest with the school/program you are applying to. Alexus will end with a few tips for writing your best Statement of Purpose, giving you the best chance of getting into your dream program, and an example of a timeline on when to begin writing your personal statement.
