China's shipbuilding sector shifts focus to advanced, high-margin vessels

In its push to maintain global dominance of the shipbuilding industry, Chinese shipbuilders are focused on manufacturing highly technical and added-value vessels, like LNG, or liquified natural gas carriers.

Ship after ship is launched from the bustling Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding yard in Shanghai, part of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation.

Shipyard officials say their use of the latest construction technology allows them to finish their vessels on time or even ahead of schedule, a detail that clients appreciate.

Shipyard officials say they have 19 billion U.S. dollars-worth of orders, scheduled through the year 2029.
