Check out this handy shell script I created using an inception diffusion-based LLM tool! Meet `git-changedsurf` (aliased as `gcd`), a command designed to streamline navigating your Git repository, especially when dealing with ongoing or leftover changes across multiple directories.
In this video, I demonstrate how I built this script and how it fits into my development workflow. Watch me use my coding browser and AI browser side-by-side to bring this tool to life.
*Why is `git-changedsurf` useful?*
This tool really shines in specific, yet common, developer scenarios:
1. *Managing Leftover Changes:* It's particularly helpful when you jump back into a project and need to quickly orient yourself. If you have uncommitted changes or new files lingering from a previous session (like yesterday's work), `gcd` instantly shows you which directories need attention, saving you from manually searching or running complex `git status | grep` commands.
2. *Navigating Complex Projects:* The true value of `git-changedsurf` becomes apparent in larger codebases. When your modifications are spread across numerous nested directories, manually typing `cd path/to/somewhere/deep` repeatedly is inefficient. This script provides a quick, interactive menu to jump straight to those scattered locations.
While useful any time you have multiple modified/untracked files, its biggest impact is felt when dealing with that "morning cleanup" of yesterday's work or navigating the distributed changes common in complex feature development or refactoring.
It helps you stop wasting time navigating and provides a focused, numbered list of relevant directories based on your current Git status, allowing you to `cd` into your choice with a simple number input.
