Granaína as a solo guitar piece is inspired by the solitude and the quietness of La Alhambra(Moorish castle in Granada). Granaína brings the sounds of the water, the fountains and the birds of old times. Many of the motifs for this song were evidently borrowed for the famous composition "Leyenda" by Isaac Albeniz. Played in the key of E minor, this song uses a basso figure known as the Romanesca from the Renaissance (a bass line that descends stepwise from tonic to dominant). In today's musical language, this progression is simply referred to as "Spanish Cadence" which is a cornerstone of the Flamenco sound and musical identity. In this composition, Jose Luis pulls from his memories of his mentor, Mario, as a young boy playing for hours upon hours. His legacy always present in his hands, in his music, and in his patience.
