In this lecture, we apply F = ma to a finite material volume of fluid, using the Reynolds Transport Theorem derived in Lec 3. The central difficulty of treating moving fluids is quickly encountered, namely, how to describe surface forces or stresses. This will lead us to retrace the brilliant thinking of Cauchy and to derive his fundamental theorem, which expresses the surface stress vector in terms of the stress tensor operating on the unit normal to the surface. Thus armed, we will be able to derive the Cauchy linear momentum equation, which is applicable in general to all continua, be they fluid or solid, simple or complex.
