LETTER XXI. TO ANZIR, KING OF MAURETANIA
Gregory writes that he has consecrated Bishop Servandus at the king's request. He thanks him for the gifts sent and for releasing Christian captives. He commends certain individuals sent to the king by Alberic and Cincius from Rome.

GREGORY, Bishop, Servant of the Servants of God,
to ANZIR (also spelled ANAZIR), King of Mauretania in the Province of Sitifensis, Africa,
greetings and apostolic blessing.
Your noble self sent us letters this year requesting that we ordain Servandus, a presbyter, as bishop according to Christian practice. Since your request seemed just and worthy, we made efforts to fulfill it.
You also sent us gifts, and, out of reverence for Saint Peter, the Prince of the Apostles, and love for us, you released the Christians who were being held captive among you. Moreover, you promised to release others as well. This goodness of yours was inspired in your heart by the Creator of all things—God—without whom we can do no good, nor even think rightly. He, who enlightens every person coming into this world, has enlightened your mind in this very intention.
For Almighty God, who wills all people to be saved and none to perish, finds nothing more acceptable in us than when a person, out of love for Him, loves another human being, and refrains from doing to others what he would not wish done to himself. This love, then, is something we and you owe to each other more than to other peoples, since we believe in and confess the one God—though in different ways—and daily praise and revere Him as the Creator of the ages and Ruler of this world.
As the Apostle says: “He is our peace, who has made both one.”
And this grace that God has granted you is known by many of the Roman nobility through us; they altogether admire and praise your goodness and virtues. Among them are two of our close associates, Alberic and Cincius, who were raised with us almost from their youth in the Roman palace. Greatly desiring to enter into your friendship and love, and eager to serve you in those things that pleased our forefathers, they are sending their own men to you, so that through them you may understand how highly they esteem your wisdom and nobility, and how willingly and ably they desire to serve you.
We commend these men to your majesty, and we ask that the same love we always wish to show you and yours, you would in turn show to them for our sake and as a reward for their loyalty.
For God knows that we love you purely for His honor, and that we desire your well-being and salvation in this life and in the life to come. And so we pray with heart and voice that God Himself may, after the long course of this life, lead you into the bosom of blessedness, into the embrace of the most holy patriarch Abraham."
