Can't Buy Me Love- The Beatles (Guitar Cover): Including Lost Gretsch!

The Beatles recorded Can't Buy Me Love and the German versions of She Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand on January 29th, 1964, in Paris! They were on their European tour and stopped by EMI's Pathé Marconi Studios to record these songs

Can't Buy Me Love's backing track consisted of Ringo and Paul on their usual drums and bass, John on his Gibson J-160e acoustic guitar, and George on...?

Pictures from this day show George playing his Gretsch Country Gentleman. HOWEVER, I have a theory that he actually used his Gretsch Tennessean for this backing track recording!

In late 1963, George acquired his Tennessean. The Country Gent became the guitar he would be most associated with during 1964, as it was used on the Ed Sullivan show in Feb 1964. He didn't seriously start using his Tennessean on their albums until Beatles For Sale later that year

But in pictures and footage, George is seen using his Tennessean during some December 63/January 64 shows. He even used it for their variety show appearance, Sunday Night at The London Palladium

Throughout January of 64, George used both his Tennessean and Gent. The Jan 29th recording of Can't Buy Me Love has a sound that is more bright and lacking sustain. I believe he used the Tennessean on this backing, and then used the Gent for Sie Liebt Dich

Fortunately... I have both a 1967 Gretsch Tennessean and a 1967 Gretsch Country Gentleman! I'm plugged into my Vox AC-30C2x. George would've used his Vox AC-50 head and cab

Overdubs were done later on February 25th 1964. This included George's Rickenbacker 360/12 part, and a new double-tracked guitar solo using his Gent. His Paris guitar part was SCRAPPED, however you can still hear it faintly in the background, especially at 1:18 during the guitar solo

Listening to some isolated tracks, I was able to pick out other instances in the song (other than the solo) where the Paris Gretsch can be heard-

0:03 The Intro, Choruses, and Outro, George plays what the Rickenbacker later did in overdubs. The Paris part has a bit more picking involved

1:43 George plays a quick Bb note on the g-string

Also, 0:45 John accidentally stays on E minor, instead of going to C
