Cher has been married two times over the course of her lifetime, and each of these marriages resulted in a child. Cher was married to first husband Sonny Bono for over a decade, with the much older man wooing her when she was still in her teens. Many believe that Sonny took advantage of Cher and used her to promote his own fledgling music career. If this was Sonny’s intention, it certainly proved successful! When it came time to choose a second husband, Cher decided to settle on someone who was an equally big celebrity as her. That way, she knew that he wasn’t trying to get anything out of her besides love.

For her second husband, Cher decided on rock star Gregg Allman. The two were both musicians, but they came from very different worlds. Cher was so taken aback by her new husband’s rock-and-roll lifestyle that she filed for divorce from his after a little over a week. Thankfully, Gregg then promised to keep his partying to a minimum, and the pair’s marriage ended up lasting five years. A year into their marriage, Cher gave birth to second child Elijah. After Cher and Gregg’s divorce, Cher ended up sending Elijah to boarding school. This was the first of many things that drove a wedge between the mother and son.
